story by Exi Wijaya: RAPALA

In February 2002, there was an explosion at an Exxon Mobil gas plant near Blora, in central Java. The people of the surrounding five villages were forced to evacuate because of leaking gas from the explosion. Hundreds of people have reported symptoms such as shortness of breath and faintings.

The sound of the fire was described by one resident as 'a fighter plane rumbling over head,' and continued for four weeks after the initial explosion.

The height of the flames were up to a radius of 200 meters and the fire coul be heard up to 10km away. At night, the fire could be seen from a distance of 100 km away.
